In the past 10 years, the only artists who have also managed the feat are Taylor Swift and Drake, and while they are still two of the most popular stars in the industry, their latest efforts haven’t even come close to the million mark. The British superstar appeared to be the last musician who had might have been able to move one million copies of a new album in the U.S., and her failure to do so suggests that nobody else will, perhaps ever again. While Adele certainly has reason to celebrate her success, the fact that she didn’t make it to one million units is telling.

That sum includes 692,000 pure purchases, and it’s easily enough for the title to score the largest debut of 2021. 1 on this week’s Billboard 200 with 839,000 equivalent units moved in its first full frame of availability.
